In this section, we break out our English language skills and inform you about the latest news from the German Beko Basketball Bundesliga. If you’re short on time but still want your fill of Germany’s top basketball league then you are in the right place. Every week David Hein (www.heinnews.com) brings you up-to-date in German basketball – the Beko BBL short and sweet:
Ulm pass Bamberg mark to start season.
ratiopharm ulm made easyCredit BBL history as they beat Science City Jena 114-83 for their 18th straight win to start the season, moving past Brose Bamberg’s 17-0 start to the 2011-12 season. Ulm’s record this season is officially 17-0 because their win over Phoenix Hagen was annulled after Hagen were banished from the league following their bankruptcy filing. But the win will be included in the record books regarding this streak. The all-time mark belongs to TuS 04 Leverkusen, who won all 25 games in the 1969-70 season – the first 18 regular season contests, six in the next round and the final against MTV Gießen. And ALBA BERLIN twice won their first 24 regular season games – in 1996-97 and 2000-01. Ulm, who sold out the ratiopharm arena for the 111th time in a row, eased past Jena thanks to 62 points combined from Raymar Morgan and Chris Babb while Braydon Hobbs picked up 16 points, 12 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals.
Ulm finally lose in Germany - to Bayern in EuroCup
ratiopharm ulm may be undefeated in the easyCredit BBL but the league leaders are no longer undefeated in Germany as Bayern Munich knocked off Ulm in the EuroCup - in Ulm no less. Munich held Ulm to just 8 points in the third quarter in a 68-57 victory to start the EuroCup Top 16. Ulm is averaging nearly 93 points a game in the BBL but shot under 28 percent in the game against Bayern in the loss.
Bayern in third place alone with comfortable win at Ludwigsburg
Bayern Munich followed the impressive showing win over Ulm with another road win in the league by winning at MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg 75-65. Danilo Barthel came off the bench for a season-high 18 points as Bayern held Ludwigsburg to just 36 percent shooting in improving to 14-3 and third place in the league.
Bamberg depth too much for Bonn’s one-man Thompson show
Ryan Thompson dropped 33 points on his former team but Brose Bamberg were just too deep in taking over in the second quarter for an 85-70 win at Telekom Baskets Bonn to remain just one game behind Ulm and two games ahead of Bayern at 16-1. Leon Radosevic scored a BBL career high 22 points for Bamberg while new acquisition Jerel McNeal picked up 11 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals in his easyCredit BBL debut. Bonn dropped their second straight game and third in four to fall to 9-8.
Bayreuth lose again - dominated by Braunschweig
While Bamberg have to keep an eye out on Bayern, medi bayreuth will have to keep a watch out for ALBA BERLIN charging up behind them as Bayreuth lost at Basketball Löwen Braunschweig 82-63 for their second loss in three games. Bayreuth are now 13-4 while Berlin are 12-5 after Bayreuth were out-scored 44-29 in the second half, shooting just 35 percent from the field. Dyshawn Pierre has 19 points and 9 rebounds and Geoffrey Groselle picked up 13 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks as Braunschweig grabbed a huge win in their fight to avoid relegation. They won their second game in three contests to move to 4-13 - three games ahead of 17th placed RASTA Vechta.
Berlin come back for 8th straight win
ALBA BERLIN are making a serious charge for a home court spot in the first round of the playoffs as they have reeled off eight straight victories to move to 12-5 - just one game behind fourth placed medi bayreuth. Berlin charged back from a 12-point deficit in the second quarter with a 27-13 third quarter to grab an 80-69 victory at RASTA Vechta. Dragan Milosavljevic picked up 22 points, 5 rebounds and 9 points for the winners. Vechta are 1-16 after their 11th straight loss - two games behind WALTER Tigers Tübingen.
Paulding scores 5,000th BBL point in Oldenburg win
Rickey Paulding was the man of the hour as EWE Baskets Oldenburg beat WALTER Tigers Tübingen 86-82 at home to move to the sixth placed team behind Berlin at 9-8. Paulding picked up 13 points to reach the 5,000 point mark in the easyCredit BBL. His 5,001 points rank him 17th in league history and he is third in active BBL players behind Derrick Allen of RASTA Vechta with 5,535 points and Science City Jena’s Julius Jenkins with 5,239 points. Tübingen have lost seven straight games and are 16th at 3-14.
Göttingen spoil Bauermann’s return to the easyCredit BBL
BG Göttingen spoiled Dirk Bauermann’s return to the sidelines of the easyCredit BBL with a 79-67 win over s.Oliver Würzburg to remain in the hunt for the playoffs. Alex Ruoff nearly collected a triple-double with 22 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists to go with 3 blocks as Göttingen improved to 7-10 - one win from a spot in the playoffs. Würzburg dropped to 5-12 in their first game under Bauermann, who returned after 4 years and 8 months of being away from the league.
SKYLINERS add Finnish international Shawn Huff
Also back in the easyCredit BBL is Shawn Huff as the Finnish international signed a deal until the end of the season and an option for 2017-18 with FRAPORT SKYLINERS. The 32-year-old Huff was with MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg from 2013 to 2016. He played earlier this season with French Pro A team Le Portel Cote d’Opale.
Player of the Week
Raymar Morgan continued his superb run for ratiopharm ulm in picking up this round’s Player of the Week honors. Morgan torched Science City Jena for 34 points on 10-of-15 shots and 13-of-14 free throws to go with 5 rebounds and 3 assists for an efficiency of 34. Morgan’s teammates Chris Babb and Braydon Hobbs both had tremendous games as well with 27 efficiency rankings.

Pape scored his first basket in scoring 2 points while picking up 2 rebounds and 2 assists - the first rebounds and assists of his career.
