Weekly News 28: Champion gets first loss, Rice saves Bayern, Bayreuth top Beko BBL

In this section, we break out our English language skills and inform you about the latest news from the German Beko Basketball Bundesliga. This week: Bayreuth top BBL, Dragons and Bryce Taylor slay Bamberg, MVP John Bryant dominates again.
If you’re short on time but still want your fill of Germany’s top basketball league then you are in the right place. Every Wednesday David Hein (www.heinnews.com) brings you up-to-date in German basketball – the Beko BBL short and sweet (for feedback and suggestions please email to Simon@Beko-BBL.de).

The Alpha Males: Bayreuth beat Ludwigsburg

We figured that BBC Bayreuth deserved a bit of props as they continued their strong start with a 94-82 victory at home over previous unbeaten Neckar GIANTS Ludwigsburg to remain undefeated at 4-0, while starting every game with the young Germans Simon Schmitz (22) and Nico Simon (25) in the backcourt. Marco van den Berg’s team has captured road wins at s.Oliver Baskets and Telekom Baskets already this season – not easy places to go into and win. Against Ludwigsburg, who had beaten FRAPORT SKYLINERS at home and ratiopharm ulm on the road, second year pro Gary McGhee put on an impressive show, leading Bayreuth with 22 points and 13 rebounds while Beckham Wyrick scored a BBL career-high 19 points. The duo of Kammron Taylor and Lucca Staiger combined for 42 points but it was not enough for Ludwigsburg, who dropped to 2-1:

Game of the Week: Artland hand champions first loss of season

Three-time reigning champions Brose Baskets did not lose for the first time in Germany last season until late November. Well, the Beko BBL teams are a full month ahead of last season as Artland Dragons handed Bamberg a 78-72 loss. Bryce Taylor’s highflying act (who as you maybe remember is well-known in Bamberg since game 5 of the 2010 finals) was too much for Bamberg to handle with 21 points while Anthony King was a force in the paint with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Bamberg had just three players in double figures led by Bostjan Nachbar’s 27 points and 9 rebounds. Bamberg’s big issue was committing 18 turnovers to just 12 from Artland. Bamberg head coach Chris Fleming must have his men ready mid-week in the Euroleague home opener against Besiktas. The showdown against Artland wasn’t the best of preparations for that.

The Thriller: Rice brings Bayern back, survive MBC

Tyrese Rice brought Bayern Munich back from certain defeat with 11 fourth quarter points and the winning free throws with 24 seconds left in a 73-71 road victory over Mitteldeutscher BC. MBC could not stop Rice, who scored Bayern’s final 8 points in the last 1:46 and finished with 19 points. Chevon Troutman added 16 points and 9 rebounds as improved to 2-0 on the road but are 0-2 at home. Promoted MBC definitely won some fans in playing on national television in Germany. Sharaud Curry scored 14 points in a battle of little giants at the playmaker position.

Deal of the week: Be part of the action at ALLSTAR Day 2013

Ever want to be close to the action? I mean, really close? Even part of the action? Well, here’s your chance to be a special coach for the Beko BBL ALLSTAR Day 2013. You’ll be at practice in the morning, in the locker room before tip-off and on the bench during the big game. Sorry, but you can forget about getting subbed in. We can’t let you get THAT close (wink, wink). All you have to do is design the ALL-STAR Day 2013 uniform. So, get out your creative thinking caps and come up with a great design. All entries must be sent to Trikot@Beko-BBL.de by October 25, 2012. For rules and regulations regarding the design, check here or send an email to the above address.

Welcome to the Beko BBL: Scott scores 20 in Skyliners debut

Shooting guard Ted Scott scored 20 points in his debut with FRAPORT SKYLINERS, who still lost 78-59 against TBB Trier. Scott, who signed a deal with Frankfurt until January 2013, has a history of high scoring games. He led the Polish league in scoring in 2010-11. Last season he won the Portuguese title as the fourth-best scorer.

Statline of the Week: Bryant dominates Würzburg

Reigning MVP John Bryant is giving a great audition for a repeat Most Valuable Player trophy as the center collected 16 points, 14 rebounds and 5 blocks in ratiopharm ulm’s 95-88 win over s.Oliver Baskets. Ulm also made 30 of 41 free throws compared to 11 of 14 for the guests. Even Würzburgs 14-0 Run at the end couldn’t get them a win:

Meat and potatoes

BBC Bayreuth lead the Beko BBL standings at 4-0 while ratiopharm ulm are 3-1 and ALBA BERLIN are the only other team not to suffer a defeat at 2-0. Five teams are even at 2-1. Brose Baskets star Bostjan Nachbar leads the league in scoring with 21.0 points ahead of Kammron Taylor from Ludwigsburg. John Bryant of ratiopharm ulm is the top rebounder and shotblocker and leads in efficiency rating while Telekom Baskets Bonn playmaker Jared Jordan is tops in assists.
