Weekly News 30: Danilo with authority, ALBA lose again and great marriage present for head coach
Game of the Week: Oldenburg beat Braunschweig in battle
Konrad Wysockis basket with three seconds left gave EWE Baskets Oldenburg a 60-59 home victory over New Yorker Phantoms Braunschweig. Four days after losing at home to Bremerhaven (and one day after celebrating his marriage), Oldenburg coach Sebastian Machowski guided his team to a win over his former club. Braunschweig took the lead 59-58 with 10 seconds remaining on Robert Kulawicks basket. But Kulawick missed the and-one free throw and Dru Joyce fed Wysocki with a brilliant back door pass for the game-winner (see video below). Oldenburg are now second in the Beko BBL with a 5-2 record while Braunschweig dropped to 2-4.
Statline of the Week: Chubb picks up second double-double
Adam Chubb carried Oldenburg to the win over Braunschweig with 20 points, 14 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks. It was the centers seconds double-double of the season.
Troubles continue for Alba: Drop third straight game
As strong as ALBA BERLIN looked to start the season, Sasa Obradovics team dropped their third straight game within seven days, losing 93-84 at Neckar RIESEN Ludwigsburg in overtime following defeats to ratiopharm ulm in the Beko BBL and Asseco Prokom in the Euroleague. We came back down to reality, said Berlin coach Obradovic after the Ludwigsburg loss, which leaves Alba 2-2 in the league. Berlin wasted a 12-point lead early in the second half as they could not hold off the hosts. John Turek collected 19 points and 6 assists for Ludwigsburg, who jumped to 3-3 in the standings, while Kammron Taylor had 19 points but missed a free throw with two seconds left to force the extra session. German international Lucca Staiger from the hosting team, who was playing for Berlin the last three years, missed the game because of a suspension for his foul on Tyrese Rice.
Sign of Life: Skyliners blow out Bonn
FRAPORT SKYLINERS came into their game against Telekom Baskets Bonn in last place but Muli Katzurins Frankfurt team came up with an inspired defensive showing in blowing out Bonn 78-53 for their first home win of the season. Skyliners forced 19 Bonn turnovers as they kept the leagues top playmaker Jared Jordan in check with just two assists and three turnovers. Check out 21 year old Danilo Barthel with his monster dunk over Patrick Ewing Junior:

Beko BBL, kinder+sport collaborate to help develop youth
The Beko BBL is taking another step in developing young German talent with its support of the kinder+sport Basketball Academy. After a successful first year with ALBA BERLIN, the league added the Academy to its youth program while Beko BBL clubs Bayern Munich, Brose Baskets and EWE Baskets all created academies as well for youngsters between 7 and 15 years. German former international Henning Harnisch, who mainly developed the program, is working as the patron of the Academy. The children receive training in shooting, dribbling, passing and coordination and can work their way up through a series of levels with different color jerseys, going from Rookie (white jersey) to Junior (yellow), Player (blue), Baller (green), Master (Red) and finishing at Allstar (black).
Meat and potatoes
ratiopharm ulm came back from a 12-0 deficit to start the game but beat Phoenix Hagen to jump to the top of the Beko BBL standings with a 5-1 record while EWE Baskets Oldenburg are second at 5-2 followed by Brose Baskets Bamberg and TBB Trier both with 4-1 marks. The last two placed teams are Mitteldeutscher BC and LTi GIESSEN 46ers with 1-5 records. Bamberg star Bostjan Nachbar took over the scoring lead from Ryan Brooks of Giessen. Reigning MVP John Bryant of ulm leads the league in rebounds, blocks and efficiency rating while Telekom Baskets Bonn point guard Jared Jordan is tops in assists.
