In this section, we break out our English language skills and inform you about the latest news from the German Beko Basketball Bundesliga. This week: Bryant talks trash, wins All-Star game MVP; Jus Fly, Mallet provide highlights; Gavel becomes German; and Patrick cleans house in Ludwigsburg.
If you’re short on time but still want your fill of Germany’s top basketball league then you are in the right place. Every Tuesday David Hein (www.heinnews.com) brings you up-to-date in German basketball – the Beko BBL short and sweet (for feedback and suggestions please email to Simon@Beko-BBL.de).

Internationals win All-Star Game, trash-talking Bryant MVP

Team International threw down some pressure defense in the first half and held on to beat Team National 113-95 at the Beko BBL All-Star Game. Bayern’s Jan Jagla was the game’s leading scorer for the German team with 20 point while John Bryant led the Internationals, who were really self-confident before the game, with 19 points to grab MVP honors – for the second straight All-Star Game. Bryant also provided some fun moments on the court as well, talking some trash with his ratiopharm ulm coach and Team National boss Thorsten Leibenath in the first half and then in the later stages helping Per Günther dunk over him:

And thanks for asking: Yes, it looked a little bit like a famous moment from Dirty Dancing:

Jus Fly, Mallet win dunking and three-point contests; Ogbe MVP in NBBL game

The All-Star Game was hardly the only highlight of the evening in Nuremberg as the dunking contest proved spectacular and even the three-point shooting contest had an outstanding showing. Despite Sergio Kerusch wowing the crowd with his Batman dunking act, amateur Justin “Jus Fly” Darlington stole the show with one dunk topping the next – just watch the highlights below. That came after Kerusch’s Artland teammate Demond Mallet lit up the arena with his sharp-shooting in the three-point contest. He nailed 23 of 30 points in the first round before dropping 20 points in the finals to win the event. The All-Star festivities started with the NBBL All-Star Game with the South team dominating their way to a 67-46 win. David Taylor scored 15 points but his South teammate Kenneth Ogbe won the MVP award with 11 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists.

Bamberg add a German – bureaucratically: Gavel gets German passport

Three-time reigning champions Brose Baskets Bamberg took a huge step towards winning four in a row as they added a German player to their ranks. Of course Anton Gavel has been with Bamberg for years, but the Slovakian has received a German passport, a move which means Gavel will now count as a German in the Beko BBL’s 6+6 foreigner’s regulation. Bamberg coach Chris Fleming has more flexibility with his line-up now, especially regarding his low post players. Check this piece about further implications of the move.

On the brink of history: Berlin take on Bamberg in Euroleague

History will be made this Thursday as a German team will finally book their first victory in the Top 16 of the Euroleague. Both ALBA BERLIN and Brose Baskets Bamberg are 0-10 lifetime in the Euroleague’s second round, including four straight losses by both teams to start this season’s extended Top 16. But the two teams will square off on Thursday at Berlin’s o2 World arena for the historic event. Check out the highlights of the first meeting of the teams in the Beko BBL this season in December – a blowout victory for Berlin:

Patrick cleans house in Ludwigsburg, releases Taylor and Weaver

New head coach John Patrick continues his overhaul of Neckar RIESEN Ludwigsburg as he and the club agreed to cancel the contracts with the American duo Kammron Taylor and David Weaver with immediate effect. The relegation-threatened club has said they will be looking for new players before the transfer window closes on February 28.

Meat and potatoes

Brose Baskets Bamberg head out of the All-Star Game break as the runaway leaders of the Beko BBL with a 16-2 record. Trailing at 12-6 are ratiopharm ulm, Bayern Munich and EWE Baskets Oldenburg with Berlin at 11-5. Ludwigsburg remain in the relegation zone at 17th with a 5-14 record while LTi Giessen 46ers are last at 4-14. Reigning MVP John Bryant is the league’s leading scorer (16.8 ppg) and rebounder (9.9 rpg) and is tops in efficiency (21.7). Bonn’s All-Star point guard Jared Jordan leads the league in assists with 8.3 per game.
