Germany go 0-3 in Supercup in Ulm, one more warm-up for EuroBasket 2013

With less than two weeks before the start of EuroBasket 2013, Germany lost all three games at the Supercup last weekend in Ulm, dropping contests to Bosnia & Herzegovina, FYR of Macedonia and Greece to finish fourth of four teams. Frank Menz’s team has one more warm-up before heading to Slovenia, taking on Sweden in Bamberg on Friday August 30. In their first game Friday at the Supercup, Germany ran into a hot Mirza Teletovic who had 26 points and nine rebounds while new Bayern Munich acquisition Nihad Dedovic had 18 points in Bosnia’s 73-62 win over Germany (video highlights). In the second game, Bo McCalebb scored 14 points as Macedonia won 81-67 (video highlights). And in the third place game, Euroleague champion Vassilis Spanoulis poured in 19 points in Greece’s 78-62 win:

Bayern’s Robin Benzing paced Germany in scoring against Bosnia with 13 points while Tibor Pleiß was top scorer against Macedonia (16 points) and Greece (18 points).

Frequent flyer Tony Gaffney returns to Bonn

Telekom Baskets Bonn point guard Jared Jordan definitely must have been excited when his team announced the return of athletic power forward Tony Gaffney on a one-year contract. The assist master Jordan finally has his high-flying act back as Bonn fans are already looking forward to Gaffney’s spectacular dunks – not to mention the breath-taking blocked shots which made him the top shot-blocker in 2011-12. Beko BBL fans definitely hope to see Gaffney back in the Slam Dunk Contest at the Beko BBL ALLSTAR Day:

Berlin sign all-arounder (on and off the court) Kendall

While most Beko BBL fans know Gaffney, they may not know ALBA BERLIN’s new center Levon Kendall, who signed a one-year contract with an option for a second season. The 29-year-old Canadian international has a tale too telling not to share. Levon plays the piano; sings his own songs; and writes some inspiring and thought-provoking poetry. Here’s another bit of his word mastery looking back at his philanthropic support of the Up with Hope social project in Kenya:

Weekly News’ personal message to Levon: “Hey tall guy, I like your height” – and your spirit. Welcome to Germany!

Berlin guard David Logan talks first impressions with Alba

Kendall’s future ALBA teammate David Logan took some time to talk about his first impressions of being in Berlin and his role as one of the leaders of a young team:

Canadian international Doornekamp signs with Braunschweig; Bremerhaven pick up Juskevicius; Sullivan joins Skyliners

Berlin weren’t the only team to sign a Canadian international as New Yorker Phantoms Braunschweig locked up versatile forward Aaron Doornekamp for one season. Eisbären Bremenhaven also signed an international player in adding Lithuanian combo guard Adas Juskevicius to a one-year deal after he had played last season with Lithuanian giants Zalgiris Kaunas. ratiopharm ulm meanwhile hope to have solved their short term problems at the power forward position in bringing in 23-year-old American Greg Mangano on a two-month contract. Mangano will help fill in the low post for Ulm while Keaton Nankivil and Daniel Theis both recover from shoulder surgery. FRAPORT SKYLINERS for their part solidified their backcourt in giving a one-year contract to rookie combo-guard Frankie Sullivan:

Bayern part ways with Homan, Kerusch out long term with knee injury

While new players come in, one player found himself out at his team and another one will be sidelined for some time. After Bayern Munich signed two-time MVP John Bryant, German international center Yassin Idbihi and Deon Thompson in the off-season, there was no room for Jared Homan. Munich and Homan agreed to part ways with immediate effect. Artland Dragons meanwhile will have to do without forward Sergio Kerusch as the 24-year-old suffered a serious left knee injury and will undergo surgery.

Maxi Kleber returns to the court

There was great news out of one of the first pre-season games for a Beko BBL team as top talent Maxi Kleber returned to the basketball court. The 21-year-old scored eight points in s.Oliver Baskets Würzburg’s 98-76 win over ProA side BV Chemnitz 99. It was the first time Kleber was on the court since a test game against Bamberg on August 31, 2012. His last Beko BBL action was in the 2011-12 playoffs against Berlin. Kleber has battled a series of injuries over the past few years but is considered one of the top 1992-born talents in Germany – and possibly Europe (check out some of his highlights).
