Maik Zirbes debuts for Bayern / “Silent Night” in Bayreuth / Vechta lose in Spradley debut

— David Hein

It’s dress rehearsal for the four teams at the easyCredit TOP FOUR - facing off against their opponents just days in advance. Meanwhile, Maik Zirbes ma-de his Bayern Munich debut and the fans at medi bayreuth were up to some Silent Night fun. RASTA Vechta for their part brought in a new coach but not even Doug Spradley could help their losing ways.

In this section, we break out our English language skills and inform you about the latest news from the German easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga. If you’re short on time but still want your fill of Germany’s top basketball league then you are in the right place. Every week David Hein (www.heinnews.com) brings you up-to-date in German basketball – the easyCredit BBL short and sweet:

Ulm hot from outside, too much for Braunschweig and Bremerhaven

ratiopharm ulm showed their outside shooting prowess in picking up comfortable wins over Basketball Löwen Braunschweig and Eisbären Bremerhavent to remain undefeated atop the easyCredit BBL. Ulm nailed 11-of-17 three-pointers in the first half in running away with a 100-76 victory at Braunschweig and then made up the Round 19 game at Bremerhaven with 14-of-19 three-pointers in a 106-66 rout. The trio of Chris Babb, Raymar Morgan and Da’Sean Butler combined for 71 points, 17 rebounds and 7 assists against Braunschweig while it was Morgan, Babb and Augustine Rubit collecting 57 points, 20 rebounds and 9 assists versus Bremerhaven. Ulm improved to 22-0 while Braunschweig dropped their fourth in a row to fall to 4-17 in 16th place. Bremerhaven are 6-14.

Strong first half enough for Bamberg

Brose Bamberg used a big first half - 50-25 - to roll to a 76-57 win over FRAPORT SKYLINERS to remain 1.5 game behind ratiopharm ulm at 19-1. Daniel Theis led the charge for Bamberg with 16 points while Frankfurt lost their third game in the last four to fall to 8-13 - two places from the playoff ranks. Bamberg were hosting easyCredit TOP FOUR opponents MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg on Wednesday.

Bamberg captain Harris, Frankfurt talent Agva both return

The Frankfurt-Bamberg game also saw the return from injury of two key players. Bamberg captain Elias Harris picked up 2 points, 1 steal and 1 block in 10:19 minutes in his first game since December 4. Frankfurt’s 20-year-old center Mahir Agva had 2 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assist in 6:40 minutes in his first contest since November 19.

easyCredit TOP FOUR opponents face off in advance

The easyCredit TOP FOUR takes center stage this weekend and the teams will have faced off against each other within a week of the big spectacle in Berlin as Bayern Munich beat ALBA BERLIN in the league and Brose Bamberg were hosting MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg just three days ahead of the semi-finals. Here is a chance to win exclusive tickets to the big show in Berlin.

Berlin no match for Bayern in cup warmup, Munich also ease past Göttingen

Bayern Munich had little trouble with ALBA BERLIN with an 80-56 win in the German capital less than a week before the two face off again in the easyCredit TOP FOUR. Nihad Djedovic led the way with 15 points for Bayern, who had 26 assists for 29 baskets. Bayern followed that up with an 82-71 win at home over BG Göttingen to make it a six-game winning streak and 18-3 in the standings. Berlin have lost two in a row and are 14-7 after missing all 15 of their three-pointers at home. Berlin fans hope things will be better this weekend at the cup semis.

Maik Zirbes makes Bayern debut

Maik Zirbes has been with Bayern Munich a couple of weeks and he finally made his debut against BG Göttingen. The German international made two free throws for 2 points and grabbed 3 rebounds in 9:45 minutes of action.

Silent Bayreuth win shoot-out with Bremerhaven

Things were quiet for a while in Bayreuth before medi bayreuth ended up winning a shoot-out with Eisbären Bremerhaven 95-83 to pull 1.5 games ahead of ALBA BERLIN. Kyan Anderson went off for 30 points as Bayreuth were never threatened in the second half in pulling to 15-5. The Oberfrankenhalle crowd was quiet as a mouse for the first three minutes of the game - dubbed “Silent Game Night” - and then the spectators went crazy when Bayreuth scored their 10th point.

Oldenburg still perfect in 2017 - in easyCredit BBL

While medi bayreuth are 1.5 games ahead of ALBA BERLIN, EWE Baskets Oldenburg are just one game behind Berlin after a convincing 83-63 win at BG Göttingen. Oldenburg lost their first game of 2017 to Avtodor Saratov in the Basketball Champions League but Mladen Drijencic’s team has won five in a row in Germany to improve to 13-8. Göttingen are 7-14 following the losses to Oldenburg and Bayern Munich.

Vechta lost 77-70 at home against Telekom Baskets Bonn in Spradley’s debut for their 15th loss in a row. Their 1-20 record leaves Vechta three games behind Basketball Löwen Braunschweig while s.Oliver Würzburg and WALTER Tigers Tübingen both have five wins. Bonn improved to 11-8 thanks to 16 points from Ojars Silins.
