ratiopharm ulm finally picked up their first victory in the easyCredit BBL as they used a big fourth quarter for an 88-73 win over medi bayreuth at home. Yago dos Santos was the hero with his best game thus far as he collected 22 points in helping Ulm move to 1-4. Ahmed Hill scored 13 points for Bayreuth, who dropped to 2-3.
Game Summary: Ulm led by four points after three minutes and both teams had 6-0 runs in the first quarter, which ended with Ulm ahead 25-23. Another 6-0 spurt had Bayreuth up 29-28 and the guests built a six-point cushion and led 48-42 at halftime.
Bayreuth pushed the advantage to eight points early in the second half 52-44 only to see Ulm answer with a 13-2 run to move back in front. And the hosts led 64-62 going into the final frame. Ulm opened the fourth quarter with the first 10 points for the first double-digit lead of the game. And Ulm put the game away with four three-pointers for an 86-68 advantage with 2 minutes to play.
Numbers Please: Ulm forced Bayreuth into 19 turnovers while holding the guests to just 43.1 percent shooting, including 31.0 percent on three-pointers. And Ulm made 48.3 percent from long range.
Player of the Game: Dos Santos had totalled 16 points in his first four league games, leaving some to question his abilities. The 23-year-old Brazilian however broke out with 22 points to go with 4 rebounds and 5 assists.
The Germans: Karim Jallow helped out with 9 points and 4 rebounds for Ulm and Robin Christen added 9 points and 2 rebounds. Both Jallow and Christen were nominated for the German national team for the up-coming FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 European Qualifiers against Finland and Slovenia. Kay Bruhnke tied his season high with 9 points for Bayreuth to go with 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal.
Also Newsworthy: Ulm have not lost to Bayreuth since April 2018, now a stretch of nine games. All told, Ulm have a 24-5 record over Bayreuth.
What's up next: Ulm will look to make it two in a row on Saturday November 5 at home against NINERS Chemnitz. Before that, Anton Gavel's men will travel to Turkey to face Frutti Extra Bursaspor on Wednesday November 2 in the 7DAYS EuroCup.
