RASTA Vechta went into the national team break on a high note as they bounced back from their loss to ALBA BERLIN by defeating ROSTOCK SEAWOLVES 99-72 on the road. Ryan Schwieger paced four Vechta players in double figures with 18 points while Tommy Kuhse added 17 points and Joel Aminu had 14 points for Vechta, who have won seven of their last nine games for a 14-7 record. Rostock are still looking for their first victory in 2024 as they fell to 6-14 with their eighth straight loss. Derrick Alston led all scorers with 25 points in a losing effort.

Game Summary: The game was close in the first 5 minutes with Derrick Alston and Chevez Goodwin combining for 9 points for Rostock and Vechta’s Chip Flanigan had 5 points in an 11-11 game. Two points was the biggest lead of the game until Ryan Schwieger’s three-pointer to give Vechta a 21-18 lead. And the score was 21-20 after 10 minutes. Rostock scored the first 5 points of the second quarter to go up 25-21. Both teams committed a series of turnovers to slow down the scoring. Rostock led 30-26 only to see Joel Aminu and Tommy Kuhse hit triples to start a 14-2 Vechta run for 40-32 lead. Rostock answered with three three-pointers to tie the game 45-45 at halftime.

Rostock temporarily went ahead 49-48 but Vechta hit three three-pointers in a 13-2 run to grab a double-digit lead 61-51. Alston jumped to 22 points scored as he helped Rostock stay in the game at 61-58. Vechta were still ahead 70-62 after 30 minutes. Rostock scored only two points in the first 2 minutes of the fourth quarter and Kuhse, Schwieger and Joschka Ferner drained three-pointers as Vechta led 81-66 with 5 minutes left. Rostock did not get closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

Numbers Please: Vechta out-rebounded the number one rebounding team in the league 47-31 including 17 offensive rebounds, which they turned into a 21-4 advantage in second chance points. The Vechta reserves also out-scored the guests' starters 49-43 - led by Ryan Schwieger and Joel Aminu.

Player of the Game: Chip Flanigan did a bit of everything with 13 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals to go with 0 turnovers in 25 minutes for Vechta.

The Germans: Joel Aminu hit 2 three-pointers for 14 points to go with 8 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal for Vechta while Johann Grünloh, who went to school earlier in the day and was driven separate from the team to Rostock, chipped in 6 points, 4 rebounds and 4 blocks. At the other end, Sid Marlon Theis scored 5 points.

Also Newsworthy Part I: Rostock lost all three games against Vechta this season, starting with an 84-78 defeat in the German Cup second round in late September. Rostock's 85-81 overtime loss in Vechta on December 30 was the first defeat in their current eight-game losing streak.

Also Newsworthy Part II: Rostock earlier in the day announced the signing of guard Lester Medford, who was making his debut in the easyCredit BBL. The 30-year-old, who is known for his defensive skills and passing game, was signed until the end of the season and has played in Hungary, Switzerland, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Latvia, Poland and Italy. Medford was saddled with foul trouble in his first game but still managed to pick up 4 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.

What's Up Next: Rostock head into the cup and national team break with their next game to take place at SYNTAINICS MBC on Saturday March 2. Vechta for their part will head into the break knowing their next game will be back at home on Saturday March 2 against MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg.
