Veolia Towers Hamburg avoided a slip-up in their fight for a spot in the Play-Ins as they eased past SYNTAINICS MBC 107-76 at home. Aleksander Dziewa paced four Hamburg players in double figures with 24 points and Mark Hughes had 18 points. Hamburg improved to 13-11 after having lost three of their last four games. Hamburg remain ninth in the standings with a two-game lead over a trio of teams at 11-14. Charles Callison scored 16 points for the guests, who fell to 8-17.
Game Summary: Hamburg hit three quick three-pointers for an 11-4 lead. Two more triples for the hosts pushed the advantage to 25-15. Aleksander Dziewa nailed his second three-pointer for a 29-19 Hamburg lead, which was 30-21 after 10 minutes. Dziewa added five more points for 16 points and a 35-22 Hamburg advantage. The Wolves just had no defensive answer and a 20-4 surge by the hosts extended the margin to 57-31. And Hamburg were up 60-33 at intermission.
The guests had strong opening minutes to the second half and pulled within 62-40. Hamburg were not impressed and continued their onslaught with a 14-2 run for a 76-42 advantage. Hamburg finished the third quarter ahead 84-54. And they did not let the guests get closer than 25 points in the final 10 minutes.
Numbers Please: Hamburg shot an outstanding 53.3 percent for the game including 64.5 percent on two-pointers and 41.4 on three-pointers. SYNTAINICS MBC made just 41.3 percent from the field.
Player of the Game: Aleksander Dziewa only played 21 minutes but those were more than enough to lead Hamburg in scoring with 24 points on 6-of-9 shooting and 10-of-11 free throws. The Polish center also grabbed 3 rebounds.
The Germans: Jonas Wohlfarth-Bottermann had a solid game for Hamburg with 12 points - including hitting 6-of-6 free throws, 5 rebounds, 1 assists as well as taking three offensive fouls. Leif Möller added 7 points and 4 rebounds. Martin Breunig picked up 8 points and 4 rebounds at the other end - though he was limited to just 19 minutes due to an apparent right knee injury.
Also Newsworthy Part I: Hamburg passed the 100-point mark in the closing minutes of play, and it was the eighth time that SYNTAINICS MBC conceded at least 100 points - none of them with the game going to overtime. It was the fourth time that Hamburg eclipsed the century mark.
Also Newsworthy Part II: Hamburg faced Wolves in their first home game in easyCredit BBL history and lost 104-83 on October 4, 2019. Hamburg have now won seven of the eight games since then.
