ratiopharm ulm can breath a sigh of relief after finally collecting their first home victory in the league this season, shrugging off a slow start to knock off Hamburg Towers 78-74. Despite neither team really shining offensively, Thomas Klepeisz poured in 19 points to help Ulm move to 6-4 including 1-3 at the ratiopharm arena. Hamburg dropped to 6-4 and have never beaten Ulm in now four attempts.

Game summary: In a battle of EuroCup teams, Ulm needed more than 3 minutes to score and fell behind 17-5 having also been charged with a technical foul and unsportsmanlike foul. Ulm came up with more stops and pulled within six points and trailed 28-19 after 10 minutes. Hamburg’s offense dried up and did not score for the first 6 minutes of the second quarter and Ulm finally evened things at 28-28. Ulm were efficient enough offensively and took their first lead 34-33. And the hosts went into the locker room ahead 37-36.
Ulm’s offense continued to function and Philipp Herkenhoff hit two three-pointers in an 11-2 run as the hosts’ lead grew to double digits at 48-38. Hamburg pulled within seven points but trailed 61-52 after 30 minutes. Klepeisz knocked down a couple of three-pointers to help Ulm stay clear of Hamburg, who got to within six points a couple of occasions. Caleb Homesley hit a big three-pointer with 11 seconds remaining to get Hamburg as close as 78-74. And Ulm’s Sindarius Thornwell missed two free throws with 7.6 seconds remaining, but Hamburg could not finish the comeback.

Numbers please: Ulm shot just 42.6 percent for the game but made 42.3 percent from long range while Hamburg connected on just 38.6 percent from the field. The hosts dominated the glass, out-rebounding Hamburg 51-28, including 14 offensive rebounds. That helped them survive 23 turnovers.

Player of the Game: Thomas Klepeisz came up with big shots all game, hitting 6 three-pointers in scoring a game-high 19 points to go with 2 offensive rebounds and 4 assists.

The Germans: Philipp Herkenhoff nailed a couple of important three-pointers in scoring 8 points with 5 rebounds and both Per Günther and Karim Jallow scored 9 points for Ulm. Lukas Meisner tallied 14 points for Hamburg.

Also newsworthy Part 2: Milestone: Thomas Klepeisz joined the 300-three-pointer club as he entered the game needing two triples to reach the milestone in the easyCredit BBL.

Beyond the sidelines: Due to state regulations, the game was played without spectators at the ratiopharm arena.

What's up next: Ulm will stay at home for their next game, hosting JL Bourg en Bresse in the 7DAYS EuroCup on Tuesday December 14 before then heading north to take on EWE Baskets Oldenburg on the road on Saturday December 18. Hamburg will be also be playing their next EuroCup game at home, hosting Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar on Wednesday December 15. The Towers return to domestic action on Saturday December 18 with a game at s.Oliver Würzburg.
