Basketball Löwen Braunschweig extended their winning streak to three games as they fought past SKYLINERS 92-91 on the road to remain among the Play-In ranks. Five players scored in double figures for Braunschweig, who improved to 5-4. Barra Njie, Arnas Velicka and Luka Scuka all had 15 points with Velicka’s free throws with 2.5 seconds left securing the win. Frankfurt are still waiting for their first home victory, falling to 0-4 at the Süwag Energie Arena for a 2-8 record. The hosts have now lost six in a row in the league - though they beat BG Göttingen to reach the German BBL Cup TOP FOUR. Trey Calvin had 24 points and Malik Parson added 22 points in the loss.
Game Summary: The game was tight for the first 5 minutes as the score was tied 10-10. Jordan Theodore drained a triple and dished an assist as Frankfurt went up 16-10. Braunschweig evened it 16-16 before Trey Calvin scored eight straight points to give Frankfurt a 24-16 lead and Calvin added another triple as the cushion grew to 31-20 after 10 minutes. Braunschweig picked up the first seven points of the second period and managed to cut the gap to 38-34. Frankfurt held the guests scoreless for nearly 3 minutes and scored seven straight points for a 45-34 cushion. Braunschweig punched back with a 9-0 run to pull within 45-43 and Frankfurt led 48-43 at the break.
Braunschweig continued their momentum to start the second half with the first nine points for a 52-48 lead. Frankfurt needed almost 3 minutes to finally score but then knotted the game 54-54. The guests went up 59-54 but could not stop Malik Parsons, who scored 10 straight points for Frankfurt and made it 59-58. Braunschweig pulled ahead 65-58 only to see Frankfurt charge back with the next five points. Braunschweig led 69-65 after three quarters. Frankfurt held Braunschweig scoreless for nearly the first 3 minutes of the final frame and two Parsons triples evened the game 73-73. Tre Mitchell answered from deep for Braunschweig, who then hit 6 straight free throws for an 82-77 lead with 2 minutes to go. The hosts would not go away and Calvin's triple tied the game 84-84 with 55 seconds remaining. TJ Crockett drained a big three-pointer and Arnas Velicka converted two free throws with 2.5 seconds to make it 92-88 and secure the win.
Numbers Please: This was not necessarily a game for lovers of free-flowing, clean basketball as the teams combined for 34 turnovers (20 for Frankfurt and 14 by Braunschweig) and 75 free throws (32 of 41 for Braunschweig and 24 of 34 for the hosts). Braunschweig took better advantage of their offensive rebounds with a 9-2 plus in second chance points to go with 15 fast break points to 7 for Frankfurt.
Player of the Game: There were a number of good candidates for Braunschweig but Barra Njie collected 15 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 1 block - including an important tip-in in the final 2 minutes.
The Germans: Sananda Fru helped the winners with 8 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist and 1 block. At the other end, Lorenz Brenneke poured in 8 points and had 1 rebound while Patrick Heckmann chipped in 1 point, 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals in the loss.
Also Newsworthy Part 1: Jordan Theodore showed glimpses of why Frankfurt brought him back for a third stint. The 35-year-old collected 14 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals in just his second game back with the club.
Also Newsworthy Part 2: Frankfurt’s last home victory in the Bundesliga dates back to May 1, 2023 - an 86-77 triumph over FIT/One Würzburg Baskets. Skyliners, of course, were relegated to the ProA second division for last season and are back in the easyCredit BBL. This was Frankfurt’s first home game since October 26 against MLP Academics Heidelberg in Round 6.
