Bayern hold on for tight win in Bayreuth to remain undefeated

FC Bayern Munich survived a tough test in holding off medi bayreuth 93-90 on the road to remain undefeated atop the easyCredit BBL. Bayern led by 12 points in the fourth quarter but Bayreuth made it interesting late despite Bayern shooting 61 percent from the field. Vladimir Lucic scored 21 points and Nihad Djedovic had 16 points as Bayern jumped to 17-0. Eric Mika scored 23 points on 11-of-12 shooting with 6 rebounds, De’Mon Brooks had 20 points 6 rebounds and David Stockton chipped in 13 points and 6 assists in Bayreuth’s third straight loss to fall to 9-7.

Berlin defeated on road by Göttingen

BG Göttingen came up with a big surprise by defeating ALBA BERLIN 91-85 at home to continue their strong recent play. Göttingen blew a 15-point lead but won the game despite missing Darius Carter and Dennis Kramer. Michael Stockton collected 22 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals; Dominic Lockhart had 15 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 steals and Joanic Grüttner Bacoul picked up a career-high 15 points as Göttingen won their third in the last four to move to 7-11. Rokas Giedraitis nailed 5 three-pointers in scoring 21 points and Martin Hermannsson had 19 points on 4 three-pointers with 2 rebounds and 8 assists. But they were not enough as Berlin lost their second in the last three to fall to 11-4.

Tez three-pointer at buzzer gives Frankfurt home win over Oldenburg

Quantez Robertson nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer as FRAPORT SKYLINERS secured a 75-74 victory at home over EWE Baskets Oldenburg. Frankfurt scored just 8 points in the third quarter and trailed by 10 points with 2:38 minutes left in the game. New acquisition Tra Holder scored 6 points for Frankfurt and Oldenburg’s Vojdan Stojanovski split two free throws with 6.3 seconds left - coming into the game hitting 25-of-26 free throws this season - to make it 74-72. Robertson followed with the game-winner to finish with 16 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals while Holder had 11 points and fellow new signing Tyler Larson picked up 9 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 1 steal. Frankfurt snapped a three-game losing streak to move to 6-9. The game was also the 20th match-up of two of the league’s legends - Robertson vs Oldenburg’s Rickey Paulding, the latter still holding the all-time record in the showdown at 11-9. Oldenburg have now lost two of three games in falling to 13-4 - though they remained in second place. Will Cummings scored 22 points, Paulding had 13 points and Rasid Mahalbasic picked up 12 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists.

Frankfurt release Murphy, Heslip, add Holder, Larson

FRAPORT SKYLINERS made major changes to their team as they released Erik Murphy and Brady Heslip and brought in Tra Holder and Tyler Larson. The 23-year-old Holder was with Italian club Auxilium Torino earlier this season while the 27-year-old Larsen was signed until the end of the season after coming over from Russian club Parma Basket Perm.

Oldenburg will remain “Pauldingburg” until 2020

EWE Baskets Oldenburg and club icon Rickey Paulding have agreed to a contract extension until the end of the 2019-2020 season. That means the 36-year-old will be playing his 13th season with Oldenburg - which is also nicknamed Pauldingburg. The club also gave Paulding a so-called Loyalty Ring in recognition of his service.

Bamberg come back from 17 down to win at Jena

Brose Bamberg came back from a 17-point deficit at halftime to defeat Science City Jena 90-85 on the road. Tyrese Rice scored 7 of his 26 points in the final 3:27 minutes as Bamberg grabbed their fourth straight win on the road to improve to 11-5. Rice added 8 assists and 3 steals and Cliff Alexander picked up 12 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks. Jena have now lost 10 straight in falling to 3-13 despite Ronald Roberts collecting 19 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 block and fellow new acquisition Reggie Williams adding 14 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

Jena add reinforcements to stop losing streak

Science City Jena have reacted to their recent struggles by signing two veteran American players. The 32-year-old Reggie Williams played 206 games in the NBA and was joined by 27-year-old power forward Ronald Roberts. Williams last played in the 2016-17 season while Roberts played last season with Hapoel Jerusalem.

Jenkins scores 6,000 point in easyCredit BBL

Julius Jenkins reached a major milestone this weekend as he scored 13 points in Science City Jena’s loss to Brose Bamberg to score his 6,000th point in the easyCredit BBL. The 37-year-old reached the 6,000 point mark in 424 games. Jenkins joined EWE Baskets Oldenburg legend Rickey Paulding in the 6,000-point club and he will soon be joined by teammate Derrick Allen as the Jena captain has 5,978 points.

Würzburg come back from 18 down to beat Ludwigsburg

s.Oliver Würzburg came back from an 18-point deficit to beat MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg 82-79 for their third straight victory. Würzburg trailed by 18 points in the first quarter but came back and held Ludwigsburg to 40 percent shooting in the game, winning with a dagger three by Xavier Cooks with 55 seconds left. Mike Morrison scored 17 points on 7-of-7 shots with 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 block while Cameron Wells had 16 points and 9 assists to help Würzburg improve to 7-9. Kelan Martin picked up 22 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals and Jordon Crawford added 18 points and 8 assists in Ludwigsburg’s third straight loss on the road and second overall to fall to 9-8.

Würzburg release Perry Ellis

s.Oliver Würzburg and forward Perry Ellis have gone separate ways. The 24-year-old American had averaged 12.5 points and 3.8 rebounds while hitting 48 percent from long range in 12 games.

Giessen bomb way to road win at Bonn

GIESSEN 46ers used their long-range shooting to streak to a 105-97 victory on the road over Telekom Baskets Bonn. Giessen secured the win with a 13-0 run in the fourth quarter and hit 20-of-32 three-pointers (63 percent) to set an easyCredit BBL season record for threes made in a game. Max Landis hit 8-of-9 three-pointers for 30 points off the bench while Larry Gordon collected 21 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals, Brandon Thomas scored 19 points and John Bryant chipped in 18 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Giessen have won two in a row and three of four for a 9-9 record. Josh Mayo scored 21 points on 5 three-pointers with 4 assists and Martin Breunig picked up 19 points 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals in snapping a two-game winning streak.

 

Bonn will keep O’Shea as head coach

Telekom Baskets Bonn announced that Chris O’Shea will stay on as head coach. The 38-year-old American was assistant coach at Bonn until the firing of Predrag Krunic and then took over on an interim basis. Bonn decided to keep O’Shea in the post after Bonn beat Umana Reyer Venezia in the Basketball Champions League and then built a 14-point lead over Brose Bamberg before losing in the German Cup semi-final.

Ex-Bonn guard Ra’Shad James signs with Ulm

ratiopharm ulm added some reinforcements at the guard position with the signing of Ra’Shad James. The 28-year-old James recently was released at Telekom Baskets Bonn, with whom he averaged 14.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 15 easyCredit BBL games as well as 12.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists in the Basketball Champions League.

Ulm roll on with big win at MBC

ratiopharm ulm picked up their third straight victory as they cruised past Mitteldeutscher BC 94-81 on the road. Ulm made 71 percent of their shots from two-point range in taking over in the third quarter to move to 9-7. Dwayne Evans collected 30 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists, Javonte Green tallied 16 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals, Ryan Thompson scored 16 points and Ismet Akpinar picked up 12 points and 7 assists. MBC have dropped five straight for a 3-14 record as James Farr had 15 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists and Sergio Kerusch scored 15 points.

Braunschweig beat Crailsheim for seventh straight home win

Basketball Löwen Braunschweig rolled past HAKRO Merlins Craisheim 98-84 to snap a two-game losing streak and pick up their seventh straight home victory. Braunschweig committed just four turnovers in taking over late in the third quarter to improve to 10-8 thanks to DeAndre Lansdowne picking up 23 points and 5 assists, Scott Eatherton tallying 18 points, 13 rebounds and 3 assists and Thomas Klepeisz chipping in 12 points and 7 assists. Crailsheim have now lost two straight to fall to last place with a 3-14 record. Ben Madgen scored 17 points and Konrad Wysocki had 17 points on 4-of-4 threes with 8 rebounds.

Vechta beat Bremerhaven to extend winning streak to seven games

RASTA Vechta finished strong in an 84-77 victory over Eisbären Bremerhaven to extend their winning streak to seven games. Vechta scored the final six points of the game to improve to 13-5 in third place. Seth Hinrichs collected 21 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals, Max DiLeo scored 14 points

and TJ Bray picked up 13 points and 6 assists in the victory. Chris Warren had 16 points and 6 assists, Elston Turner grabbed 15 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists and Keith Benson chipped in 15 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. But they were not enough as Bremerhaven have now lost 11 straight games and fell to 3-14 in 17th place.

Summers signed as Brangers replacement at Bremerhaven

Eisbären Bremerhaven have found their replacement for the departed Jordan Brangers with the signing of Durrell Summers. Brangers was released shortly before Christmas and the 29-year-old Summers convinced Bremerhaven staff in a tryout. Summers last played at Finnish club Kauhajoen Karhu with whom he averaged 22.9 points and 3.5 rebounds. 

Berlin blast Frankfurt to reach German Cup final

ALBA BERLIN will get a chance to match Bayer Giants Leverkusen’s record of 10 MagentaSport BBL Pokal German Cup titles as they reached the 2019 final with an easy 105-70 victory over FRAPORT SKYLINERS in the semi-finals. Niels Giffey and Rokas Giedraitis both scored 16 points to lead six players in double figures and every Berlin player scored and grabbed at least one rebound. Berlin will face off with five-time cup winners Brose Bamberg, who will host the final on February 17. Frankfurt were led by Quantez Robertson with 16 points and 6 assists.

 

Bamberg reach German Cup final with hard fought win over Bonn

Brose Bamberg reached the MagentaSport BBL Pokal German Cup final with a tough 90-87 victory over Telekom Baskets Bonn in the semi-finals. Bamberg fell behind by 14 points in the second quarter but Bamberg got a big shot from Tyrese Rice to make it 89-87. Rice led the way with 21 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists while Cliff Alexander had 21 points and 8 rebounds as Bamberg will try to win their fifth German Cup. Martin Breunig paced Bonn with 21 points and 5 rebounds.

Player of the Week

Dwayne Evans had a huge effort in ratiopharm ulm’s win over Mitteldeutscher BC with 30 points on 10-of-12 shots and 7-of-7 free throws to go with 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 block for an efficiency of 35.

German Top Five of the Week

F: Martin Breunig, Telekom Baskets Bonn

Breunig continued his outstanding season as he collected 19 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals against Brose Bamberg in the league. That came after he had 21 points and 5 rebounds against Bamberg in the MagentaSport BBL Pokal German Cup semifinal.

F: Konrad Wysocki, HAKRO Merlins Crailsheim

Wysocki nailed all four of his three-point attempts in scoring 17 points to go with 8 rebounds and 1 block in Crailsheim’s loss to Basketball Löwen Braunschweig.

G: Dominic Lockhart, BG Göttingen

Lockhart had a great game in Göttingen’s big win over ALBA BERLIN with 15 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 steals.

G: Max DiLeo, RASTA Vechta

DiLeo played a major role in Vechta’s big win over Eisbären Bremerhaven with 14 points on 3 three-pointers, 3 assists and 1 steal.

G: Ismet Akpinar, ratiopharm ulm

Akpinar makes his spot on this team with a fine performance against Mitteldeutscher BC as he scored 12 points on 3 three-pointers to go with 1 rebound, 7 assists and 1 steal.

Young Guns

We are going to change this up this week since the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament Munich was played in southern Germany and featured four German clubs - ALBA BERLIN, FRAPORT SKYLINERS, FC Bayern Munich and ratiopharm ulm. Frankfurt, who were led by Len Schoormann and Jordan Samare, finished third as they beat Ulm with Zach Ensminger and Aleksa Bulajic in the third-place game. The fifth-place game saw Bayern defeat Berlin. Bayern’s Jason George was named to the All-Tournament Team while Berlin was led by Malte Delow since Franz Wagner did not participate in the tournament as he played with Berlin’s senior team.

Germans Abroad

Isaiah Hartenstein showed what he is capable of doing in his fight to get a spot with the Houston Rockets as he collected 42 points and 21 rebounds in a G-League game for Rio Grande Valley Vipers. In 15 G-League games, Hartenstein is averaging 19.9 points and 14.3 rebounds.
