NINERS Chemnitz rallied from 22 points down in the third quarter for an improbable 93-88 victory at Veolia Towers Hamburg and can lock up a direct spot in the playoffs later in the penultimate round. Hamburg led 57-35 early in the second half but could not stop the Chemnitz comeback. Victor Bailey paced five Chemnitz players in double figures with 23 points as they improved to 18-13 with three straight wins. Hamburg have lost four in a row for a 15-16 record despite Brae Ivey's 17 points.
Game Summary: The game was knotted 6-6 early before Hamburg pulled away with a 18-4 run thanks to seven points from Jaizec Lottie to lead 24-10. Chemnitz managed just one basket in the final 5:51 minutes of the first quarter and trailed 29-12 after 10 minutes. Hamburg needed more than 2 minutes to score in the second quarter and Chemnitz trimmed the gap to 13 points. The guests followed that with a 10-3 spurt and the score was 36-26. Brae Ivey stepped up with seven points and kept Chemnitz at bay, leading 50-35 at the break.
Hamburg kept their foot on the gas and scored the first seven points of the second half and extended the cushion to 57-35 as Chemnitz needed more than 3 minutes to score. Chemnitz picked up nine straight points to trim the deficit to 63-54. But Hamburg remained tough and led 72-59 after 30 minutes. Chemnitz continued their push in the final frame and held Hamburg scoreless for more than 3 minutes and scored the first 11 points to trail just 72-70. After Hamburg pulled ahead 80-74, the guests drained back-to-back threes and the game was even 80-80. Chemnitz took the lead 83-82 on a Jeff Garrett three-pointer and it was 85-82 after a Roman Bedime steal and dunk with 51 seconds to play. Jacob Gilyard iced the game with five of six free throws in the final 12 seconds.
Numbers Please: Chemnitz held Hamburg to just 20 percent on three-pointers and they shot 73 percent on two-pointers.
Player of the Game: Victor Bailey scored 23 points but Jacob Gilyard was outstanding in his own right, pouring in 17 points - including the big free throws in the waning seconds - while also picking up 5 rebounds and dishing out 12 assists with 1 steal for an efficiency of 28.
The Germans: Nicholas Tischler collected 6 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals for the winners while Niklas Wimberg scored 13 points with 5 rebounds and Benedikt Turudic chipped in 8 points and 3 rebounds.
Chemnitz now turn into Göttingen fans: Chemnitz did their part and could still lock up a top-six finish in the round. That would happen if ALBA BERLIN lose at BG Göttingen on Thursday May 8. Otherwise Chemnitz will have to wait until the final Round 34.
