EWE Baskets Oldenburg remained on the heels of the leading trio of teams in the league by racing past SYNTAINICS MBC 108-68 at home. Alen Pjanic made 9 three-pointers for a career high 31 points as Oldenburg improved to a 10-5 record including a 6-2 mark at home. Trey Drechsel chipped in 22 points in the win and both DeWayne Russell and Owen Klassen added double-doubles. SYNTAINICS MBC dropped to 6-9 with a 2-6 record away from home as 27 points from Charles Callison were not enough.
Game Summary: Oldenburg started the game hot from long range with three three-pointers in building a 15-7 lead. Another triple and two free throws from Drechsel increased the cushion to double figures 20-9. A three-pointer from Callison gave him seven points and had the guests within 22-16, but it was 28-18 after 10 minutes. After Oldenburg increased the margin to 15 points 33-18, the visitors followed with five straight points. The hosts answered with a 9-2 surge for a 17-point advantage, 42-25. SYNTAINICS MBC tried to stay close and managed to go into the locker room trailing 49-38.
Callison opened the second half with a three-pointer and the gap was down to eight points. Oldenburg’s defense shut down the guests with a 16-4 run for a 65-44 cushion. SYNTAINICS MBC did get the deficit to 15 points but it was 69-51 after 30 minutes. Pjanic delivered the knockout punch with three three-pointers in the first 2 minutes of the fourth quarter to make it 80-54. The guests did not get closer than 23 points the rest of the way.
Numbers Please: Oldenburg shot a blistering 46.9 percent from long range, hitting 15-of-32 three-pointers while also connecting on 21-of-23 free throws. Oldenburg also forced 22 turnovers in holding the guests to 40.0 percent shooting.
Player of the Game: Alen Pjanic continued his outstanding recent run of action as the small forward drained 9-of-12 three-pointers for a career high 31 points and also grabbed 7 rebounds and added 5 steals. Pjanic has averaged 17.3 points in his last four games.
The Germans: Besides Pjanic, Norris Agbakoko had a solid 8 minutes with 2 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 block. On the other side, Kostja Mushidi poured in 13 points to go with 3 rebounds and 5 assists in the loss.
Also Newsworthy Part 1: Oldenburg were much more than just Pjanic as Trey Drechsel and DeWayne Russell combined for 39 points, 7 rebounds, 18 assists and 3 steals and Owen Klassen had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Also Newsworthy Part 2: Oldenburg continued their dominance over the Wolfpack with a 23-10 record since the start of data collection in 1998 - including 11 wins in the last 12 games dating back to 2015. And Oldenburg are now 15-1 at home against SYNTAINICS MBC - the only loss (88-82) coming on December 14, 2013.
Also Newsworthy Part 3: SYNTAINICS MBC were missing a key part as leading scorer Kris Clyburn missed the game and will be out about a month of action with a thigh injury.
